OUR ALL-FAMILY CREW & OWNERS: Shawn, John, Ken, Perry

Shawn Smothermon

Shawn grew up in San Diego, California.  He married young and was a flooring contractor for several years before moving his wife and kids up to Seattle to help his brother Kelly and cousin John get our company started.

We were regular working fellas trying to start out, and had some struggles learning how to run a business.  Shawn brought with him  important business know-how and the ability that was needed to keep things in order, and carried the company in his name as the owner until we incorporated in September, 2000.

Shawn lives with his wife Samantha and their kids on Camano Island.  Even though he drives much farther than any of us to our Seattle jobsites, he's usually been the first to get there, often times having carried the day's package of 20 to 30 windows upstairs to the hallways before the rest of us showed up.

John T. Kartak

While still growing up in Everett with a father who did window & glass work, John took a job working for a mechanic at the local cable company throughout highschool. During that time, John's brother Kevin purchased the family glass business. Then, at age 19, he went to work for Kevin fabricating and installing mirrors & shower doors for several years.

In 1990, he spent a  few years working with Ken and Perry for a framing & remodeling contractor.  When he had days off, sometimes he'd work with his cousin Kelly doing window replacements -mostly on apartments.

John helped Kelly and Shawn start Cutting Edge in 1993.  Toward the end of 1995, he left the crew to frame houses, and then returned to Cutting Edge a year later.  John is currently an owner,  a crewmember, the project manager, and also answers the phone.  He's married to Ken's sister Jayme, has kids & grandkids, and lives in Snohomish.

Kenneth Hoffman

Ken grew up in the same home his grandfather had built in Snohomish, and got his first job working at a pallet factory.  After some construction courses in college, he went to work for a framing & remodeling contractor, building large colonial homes.

Ken later worked for Perry framing houses, and has also done a lot of projects in Snohomish over the years.  He helped John frame up a few homes in 1995/1996, and then began working with us at Cutting Edge.  Ken is one of the company owners, and also part of our all-family crew. He's usually the first guy inside the apartments & condos, carefully removing the old windows ahead of us so that we can come in behind him to put the new ones in.

He likes to hike in the mountains, sometimes adopting & repairing a cabin or two, and has been a long-time volunteer with Search & Rescue.  Ken lives with his wife Vicki just outside Snohomish in the house he built on 15 acres, with horses, chickens, dogs & cats, etc.

Perry grew up in Snohomish, and then served in the Army for a few years.  Later, he worked with Ken and John for a framing and remodeling contractor for a couple years around 1990 or so, while serving as a reservist in the National Guard.  After that, he went to work for another builder, heading up several framing crews.

He soon became a contractor, framing up homes with Ken in the greater Puget Sound area, and helped John do some framing in 1995/1996.  Whenever he was between projects he worked with us at Cutting Edge, replacing windows.  Like the rest of us, Perry is one of the owners of Cutting Edge Windows, and has been a permanent part of the crew for several years.

He also works for the sheriff's department as a volunteer with a Snohomish County Search & Rescue commission, and actively participates in most missions as the president of the Snohomish Unit.

Perry lives in Snohomish with his wife Ann (Ken's other sister) and their kids.

Sometimes customers jot down something nice for us on the back of an envelope, or in a short letter.  Since folks are more likely to complain about bad contractors than they are to applaud skilled ones, we feel that each of the following should cancel out at least ten complaints -if we were to get them. Either way, I think we're doing alright...

Thank you! Great Job! -Cheers,
Candice C.

Thank you so much for my windows! During the freeze we had last month - no ice inside!
-Laura S.

Our response: This isn't really saying much about us. It's more of a testimony of how good some of our customers are. No ice inside the new windows, and you're already happy!

BTW, your guys were great. Very fast, efficient, keen, competent, and friendly. And they listen to good radio too.
-Jonathan B.

Note: The "good radio" happens to be AM 770 KTTH. Our radio doubles as a battery charger, and the batteries just don't charge correctly unless it's on the right radio station. That's our story, and we're sticking to it.

Great Job!!

November 21, 2003

When I got back from the duplex this afternoon, the following joke was in my email...
Last year I repaced several windows in my house. They were the expensive double-insulated kind. This week I got a call from the contractor complaining that I had failed to pay him. Boy oh boy, did we go round and round. I told him that even though I am a senior citizen and used to be a blonde, I am not that stupid!  I reminded him what his salesman told me last year: "In one year they will pay for themselves."
What good timing! I guess you're out of luck now, but at least you got a down payment for this job! Thanks for the efficient and rapid job, and the careful cleanup afterwards.
-Bob & Carol L.

To whom it may concern:
I was having a problem with a patio door molding
. I turned to the yellow pages and the first company I got ahold of was Cutting Edge Windows. They did not know me, had never done any work for me, but were ever so willing to help me. I sent John a sample of the molding. The next day I received a phone call from him that the part was on its way. He did not charge me for the part or the shipping. Now that's what I call old fashioned service. I don't even know if he is an employee or owner, but that doesn't matter, he still went the extra mile. If that is the kind of service this company gives, I will tell everyone I know to take their business to them. Display this letter so that your customers can see what kind of people you are, you are rare. We have several businesses and we know what good service is. Thanks a bunch.

Our response: Actually it was kind of lucky timing, because sometimes we're slooooow when it comes to non-emergency pieces & parts like that. As far as it being free, consider it cheap advertising. You wrote this nice ad for us, and all we did was get you a small plastic part.

To the crew at CuttingEdge,
We would like to take this time to mention how much we appreciated the work you have done installing the windows here. You were always willing to take the time to answer our questions, get back to us timely when called, worked with us and our tenants schedules, and to help offer alternatives for the finished look we hoped to achieve. We liked the fact that when bidding our job, you were also involved with the installation and could offer information based on actual experience. We wish your continuing success and will mention your name whenever asked about window installation and replacements. Sincerely,
Bruce & Liz M.
